Gurdjieff stayed in New York from January 1924, giving lectures and sacred dance demonstrations, which Dukes ignored, a fact that seems to reveal the true nature of his relationship with the man he claimed to have put him on the path, although I assume he went to see one or more of the demonstrations in disguise. On March 1, still in New York, Gurdjieff spoke on God-the-Word, a subject he once discussed with Dukes. He then referred to as the Name, the Name above all names, the Name that must be hallowed, as said in the Lord Prayer. He then instructed Dukes to be attentive to the encoring of the Name, as one might be trained to hear it. It was an experience that was induced in Dukes in a cathedral at the Alexander Nevsky Abbey in St. Petersburg during the Holy Week of 1914 that made Dukes afraid, as it showed truth about his relationship with the higher, and made him break his tie, an onion, with Prince Ozay who was Gurdjieff.; At the beginning of every religion we find an affirmation of the existence of God the Word and the Word-God. One teaching says that when the world was still nothing, there were emanations, there was God the Word. God the Word is the world. God said: "Let it be so," and sent the Father and the Son. He is always sending the Father and the Son. And once He sent the Holy Ghost. Everything in the world obeys the Law of Three, everything existing came into being in accordance with this law. Combinations of positive and negative principles can produce new results, different from the first and the second, only if a third force comes in.
In every step of the descent, as the Son rises up to become in its turn a Father, the process shows a zigzag. The Father is opposed to the Son, the Son is opposed to the Father. This does not mean they need to hate one another. Yet, the Father requires the Son to be against Him, so much so, He required His Son to be crucified for Him, to save the results of creation from Himself rather than from their sins, fact that Katherine Mansfield made clear in some of her short stories such as A Little Girl and Late at Night, which she quoted a line from And Now, O Father, Mindful Of The Love, which may be taken essentially as a protest against God for what He did to His Son. Thus, the assertion of the active force (C) is found in every trembling of the vibration that comes down from the above, which is the echoing of the Name. Nevertheless, the general flow of the river continues to carry all results of creation downward unless something arises in them to produce a reverse flow back to their source of arising. Although churches, priests, and teachers, who fish in this downward stream, tell that this downward is due to our sins, it is obviously not literally true beyond the fact that this downward orientation comes from creation itself. It is more logical to see that it comes from a pressure from the Above or it is the result of having been formed with a body, which is constantly being corroded under the effect of times.
If I affirm, she denies and we argue. But nothing new is created until something else is added to the discussion. Then something new arises. Take the Ray of Creation. At the top is the Absolute, God the Word, divided into three: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost. The Absolute creates in accordance with the same law. Only in this case all the three forces necessary to produce a new manifestation are in the Absolute Himself. The Absolute creates in accordance with the same law. Only in this case all the three forces necessary to produce a new manifestation are in the Absolute Himself. He sends them forth from Himself, emanates them. The difference between the creative activity of the Absolute and subsequent acts of creation consists in the fact that, as I have said, the Absolute creates from Himself. Only the Absolute has Will; He alone sends forth the three forces from Himself. Subsequent acts of creation proceed mechanically, by means of interaction based on the same Law of Three. No single entity can create by itself—only collective creation is possible. The above insight into the secret of creation is not antique to Christianity as in the case of my own name. In the esotericism of Chinese characters, this is represented by the character尚, which graphically represents the emanation of three holy forces from the Sun Absolute. It is the name of my father, which, in this case, is read with a pronunciation that correspond to the meaning of hallowed, and the same character corresponds to the second syllable in the name Osho. Gurdjieff equated the Name with Logos, from which he derived the word Theomertmalogos, God- the-Word, the issuing of intent as laws that should be reasonably sensible to higher results of His creation, with corresponds to my name name 尚文. SSMy grandfather, who himself had the most unusual name of Go Gozo (Go - Go the Third) is unlikely to have been aware of Judaic-Christian tradition when naming my father, but, along with my grandmother Yotsu (the Fourth), is known to have been well versed in the study of ancient knowledge from China, a study that had been generally forbidden to women, which could have originated from Choon-Kil-Tess and Choon-Tro-Pel, two Chinese twin brothers who rediscovered truth about the Law of Three and the Law of Seven after the .loss of the Atlantis according to the Beelzebub's Tales. My father, a complete nonbeliever of religions in the form they are generally followed by people, nevertheless had been trained in the conduct of Shinto shamanic rituals including the pronouncing of invocative sentences and experimented with hypnosis while he was a medical college student before he had to give up his study because of the war. He personally undertook my education in an unusual manner in my childhood. Of course, such a lineage like ours of patriarchal transmission could last long in our epoch. With my younger brother, born after five years, my mother intervened, eagerly trying to keep under her care this young boy, cursed by the name of 一尚, One Forever. With this background, I find myself in a position that qualifies me to claim some amount of real understanding about the blessing and curse of the Name. Hisashi Inoue, playwright and writer, moved into hour neighbourhood in Kitakokubun, Ichikawa City, when I was six, and after several years, wrote a book, Nise Geishijin (In Imitation of Primitives) in which a group of schoolboys in the neighbourhood, all students of the Kohnodai Elementary School as I was, unitedly leave their homes to protect their boyhood from the tyranny of their education-crazed monstrous mamas, shelter themselves in a historical dwelling place of ancient primitives, plan the murder of their mamas, and resist their mamas' attempts to bring them back under their control, for which they use three measures according to the Law of Three; reward, violence, and therapy. The author states in the book that there is something special in the air of this locality that kindle the spirit of boys tin boys, preventing them to easily succumb to .the control of their mamas.
A mechanism that takes advantage of the dynamism of what Gurdjieff termed as "collective" creation, which has the potential of reversing the flow, is represented by the Chinese character 郷, pronounced Go, the name of my father's clan. This mechanism of collective creation is the main subject of study by the complex system science, that resulted in the clear distinction between downward creation (starting from God, so to say) and upward creation (termed as emergence, starting from below) that started from studies conducted by pioneers at the Santa Fe Institute, which, because of much affinity with world views expressed in the Beelzebub's Tales, I tend to regard as results obtained at the western end of the reach of influences from Gurdjieff's activities during his lifetime.
The priesthood in general have long been in the practice of obscuring truth around the position of man in relation to the fact of being in a body which is conditioned downward, as any man of normally developed reason may come to understand sooner or later. They disorient people by supporting a belief that someone above is bound to reward anyone who serves obediently as an instrument to downward ruling. They ae remarkably neutral in describing what look like the unhappy end of such obedient ones like Noah, Abraham, and Moses. It is the priesthood that praises them in spite of what are written in the scriptures. Dukes follow their example with increased emphasis in preparing one(s body for such slavery From this point of view, to tolerate premature degeneration, through ignorance or neglect, of the instrument with which the Creator has provided us to do His will—this is the real sin against' the Holy Ghost, the one sin that cannot in the very nature of things be 'remitted '. 'Repentance' consists in a resolute effort to put it right . . . he point is, is it worthwhile striving after improvement or not? The fact that high spiritual power often manifests itself even through an imperfect medium merely suggests that its manifestations would be still more effective through a perfected one. The Messianic message for which the world thirsts today is that of the spiritual aspect of physical values. (from Chapter 11)
When we enter the world we are provided with only two things: a body, and time. (from Chapter 16) Not correctly understanding the relationship between the two, that the latter destroys the former, he is virtually spreading a belief about the immortality of the body as a physical entity that he tells people to train, keep in a good condition so that it may lost long as an instrument for the higher. It would make a great difference to our outlook on life if, at its outset, instead of an anticipated span of seven or more decades, the limit was fixed in nature at some much lower figure at which every human being knew with certainty that life would terminate, say at 50, or even 30, or a mere 20; and it would equally affect our outlook, but in a very, different sense, if the normal expectation of life were 100 or 120 years or more, as it ought to be. (from Chapter 16) Not only with Dukes but generally with people who are obsessed with Yoga and similar techniques, the real hidden focus of their practice is not the development of body itself, as nobody can be really so stupid enough to totally believe in its immortality. What they really do develop through the practice is an illusion of immortality, which Dukes calls time. The practice eventually makes a man a living ghost by as his life energy is absorbed into forming another of illusions around his body. And this second body cannot be of high quality because the the highest vibration level, according to the Scale of Hydrogens presented by Gurdjieff, cannot be more than H48, the level of book knowledge and make-believe nonsense esotericism, as he does not want to take anything as he demonstrated by his reaction in the cathedral and his escape from Ozay, giving an ominous shade to his later obsession about fasting and vegetarianism:
An illusory second body - believing in it and training for it, one becomes dead while being alive as it eventually confines him in the world of illusion, making him blind to the process of real growth that can happen to oneself beyond its confinement: This illusory second body is mockingly called the "bliss body" in some Eastern tradition. "You can go to heaven with it," Gurdjieff said to J. G. Bennett, admonishing him that one must develop something higher, aspiring to go further to the Sun Absolute
As one may find in the Judaic tradition examples of what may look like the lives of great helpers to God ending in anticlimax even in cases of the promises of rewards such as prosperity, triumph, and children having been fulfilled, the claim of supernatural control over life and death by Yoga has been often betrayed by the lives of those who claimed it: Vivekananda dying young from diabetes in spite of his claim of a Yogi enjoining perfect control over his body, that the sun and the mon will stop their movement when ordered to do so by a Yogi; Shri Aurobindo finally appearing to have died in spite of his teaching of physical immorality; then Paul Dukes, a preacher of longevity, believer in the length of life, dying at 78. Then, what good his assumption of 100 years did to him except it made his second body, namely, another body formed of illusion, feel better?
"Egypt" is a keyword that the White Lady of the Stars kept on suggesting to Dukes, which he kept on ignoring and did not understand what it signified even after spending a night in the confinement of the Kin's Chamber in the Great Pyramid of Giza. A worldview confined to one's body and a body of illusions formed around it. Attachment to body, sacrificing of life to illusions formed around its continuity, an intricate system of instructions about how one should escape judgments after death to save one's soul, which is nothing but a body of illusions. What else? This is Egypt. A whole civilization, enormous efforts spent in vain to sustain the dynasties that established themselves on the misapplication of God or higher knowledge that probably existed earlier. "Up out of Egypt I have called my son." The White Lady of the Starts kept of reminding him of this phrase. Plavan N. Go |
